The Brief

We were commissioned by the University of Surrey to create a new home for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.  Transforming an existing 1980's office building and fully refurbishing it into a cutting edge, 21st Century teaching facility.

Concept

Our idea was to create a communal central hub within the inner atrium; previously a winter garden this space required alteration. The atrium connects through to a new café facility and is surrounded by custom-made teaching rooms. Along with new medical training facilities on the lower ground and offices above it is a complete facility for the Health and Medical Sciences faculty.

Features

The latest teaching facilities have been created with a full ‘hospital’ training facility including simulated wards, an operating theatre, and ambulance bay which have been incorporated in the brand new suite of highly serviced teaching spaces.

One of the major changes has involved repurposing the voids beneath the building, converting them into the state-of-art simulation suites. This allows the university to recreate live environments and is a brilliant facility for paramedic and medical training enabling the reproduction of external events such as a road traffic accident, or a drug overdose at a nightclub.
