The Brief

The South Street Seaport includes the largest concentration of restored early 19th Century commercial buildings in the city. The client sought to have the buildings restored so that they could revitalize the commercial district and support the growing adjacent residential community.

Concept

SB+C Architecture were tasked with leading the design and legalization of multiple retail spaces throughout these buildings which made way for tenants such as Rag and Bone, By Chloe, and Big Gay Ice Cream. Working closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure staff level approval of all modifications.

Features

Despite space constraints, we met the challenge of providing for all the tenants’ and municipal requirements. The buildings are being brought into full compliance with safety and accessibility laws, within the limitations of 200-year-old Landmarked buildings.
