Midtown West Masterplan
The project is a transport led masterplan and urban regeneration that enhances the urban fabric, particularly for pedestrian use. Currently a run-down area in the west of Manhattan, it has a history of heavy transportation and manufacturing activities.
The area is rapidly changing and development of this magnitude calls for an ambitious plan to ensure this district is liveable for residents, efficient for commuters, and a world-class destination for visitors.
The proposed masterplan attempts to solve the existing road network connections which are currently barriers to pedestrian movement, and makes a direct underground connection to the Lincoln Tunnel. It extends the famous ‘Highline’, and generates a new network of public green spaces. By razing the above ground bus ramp, space is made for a larger more capable Madison Square Garden and entertainment complex.
The first phase looks at a new intermodal transportation center, creating a much needed new platform and concourse space for Pennsylvania Station. Above the station the proposed superstructure includes over 270 bus bays for the relocated Port Authority Bus Terminal, retail and other commercial uses including new headquarters for Amtrak and the Port Authority. The bus connection levels are conceived in a way to accommodate changes in demand, autonomous parking and flexibility for the evolution of bus transport.
