We were commissioned as part of a technical advisory role to the East London Line Project to develop the Crystal Palace Station enhancement works.
The Grade II listed building is highlighted as the ‘Jewel in the East London Line’. It makes a significant contribution to English Heritage’s vision for the Grade II listed Crystal Palace Park adjacent to it.
The refurbishment of the existing building and forecourt areas restores the setting of the station.
Carrying out various studies we developed a clear architectural strategy to cater for the integration of all known future developments to the station. Following a conservation study of the existing station building, we were able to transform the station into a transport hub without jeopardising its heritage character or its ability to remain economically sustainable and effective as a railway station for the future.
A new canopy spans the full width of the existing brick enclosing walls at platform level. Station facilities were modernised to provide a new ticket concourse and step-free access to all operational platforms in line with 21st Century rail industry standards.
