The Brief

To design a new single-storey secondary school to accommodate 75 students, aged 11-19 yrs, with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), and/or Social Communication Interaction Difficulties (SCID). External landscaping to include sport and habitat areas as well as fenced de-escalation zones.

Concept

Practical, easy-to-navigate hierarchy to aid learners’ progression through the school; centralised staff areas enable easy routes to students in need. Three distinct wings for each Key Stage made up of general teaching classrooms are clustered around an open-plan breakout space, with ancillary modules also incorporated within each Key Stage wing.

“The building offers a blend of therapeutic supportive rooms alongside general classroom spaces designed to support the academic, social and emotional progress of the students.”

David Dearsley, Head Teacher, Churchward School

Features

The materiality was carefully considered: warm Siberian Larch timber provides a softened, dynamic façade at the front juxtaposed with durable brick in Timanfaya Blue at the rear. As the timber weathers over time, it will lend itself even more by gradually blending in with the brick’s established silvery patina.
