The Brief

Tianjin is a second tier city southeast of Beijing, enjoying government support towards creating a world class access hub into global internet systems. Our client, Chayora, obtained permission to construct a fully-infrastructured, multi-phased, 2.3 million GFA campus of six separate data centres, with the aim of attracting multinational blue-chip tenants. Our affiliated practice in Hong Kong, One Space Ltd, were appointed to the design. Scott Brownrigg were appointed as an architectural technical peer reviewer.

Concept

The 11,800 sq m built-up area Phase 1A data centre comprises a three-storey housing up to 1,000 racks and nearly 1,100 sq m of ancillary offices and training rooms. Our concept seeks to make strategic interventions to the facades, arrival/security buildings and interior spaces, with the goal of creating a highly marketable, on-brand asset that reflects the state-of-the-art market positioning of this pioneering facility.

Features

The customer journey – from arrival to data halls – was considered comprehensively, carefully orchestrating access through each level of security controls as part of that experience. Importantly, since the facility would need ultimately to be branded to the tenant’s identity, the interior spaces communicate a secured, state-of-the-art, technology-intensive and reliable host whose ‘brand’ would sit behind, rather than in front of, the tenant’s.
