We developed the brief and design working in close consultation with a range of stakeholders. The central focus was to transform science teaching and learning at the School by replacing outmoded facilities with a single building comprising state-of-the-art flexible laboratories and support spaces.
The design concept dedicated a science specific subject to each floor level. Across the three floors a total of 17 teaching laboratories wrap around a central atrium “nucleus” with a feature staircase.
The atrium “nucleus” functions as an active, flexible learning space that aims to stimulate the cross fertilisation of ideas between specialisms and promote science throughout the whole school. The tall atrium glazing overlooking woodland supplies natural light and provides a connection to nature. The parallel laboratory spaces can be modified and reconfigured over time to suit the evolving needs of the School.
