41 Lothbury is part of the cluster of historic buildings at the heart of the Square Mile that symbolise the essence of the City of London as a global financial institution. We were briefed to refurbish and bring a new lease of life to this Edwardian building, a Grade II listed former bank headquarters. To sensitively blend contemporary office space with the unique style and elegance of a traditional City landmark.
Our design includes discreet additions made to the retained elevations in order
to greatly improve the building’s office space and internal circulation. New office
floors have been created around an atrium, which together with full-height glazing at the upper levels brings a good quality of daylight into the office space. The majority of the building’s plant is located in the extensive three-level basement, releasing more upper level space as highly profitable office space.
Following its refurbishment, the building’s historic qualities can now be fully
appreciated, not simply as an important piece of architectural heritage, but as a
vibrant commercial building.
The refurbishment of the Portland stone façades and the impressive marble-clad banking hall have given a new lease of life to the historic fabric of the building, demonstrating that these can be successfully reused and enjoyed as part of the vibrant new development
