Increased city energy mandates are creating opportunities for developers to tie environmental initiatives such as LEED and Passive House into projects with less cost than ever before. The brief was to fully renovate a historic Greenwich Village home, incorporating state-of-the-art environmentally-friendly features, appliances, and building techniques to increase the lifespan of the building and enhance occupant wellbeing.
The past is beautifully melded with the present with historic features juxtaposing new and contemporary architectural details throughout. A stunning open multi-floor staircase with large skylights flood the entire home with light, while dark repurposed wood flooring made from original salvaged joists provides the contemporary interior with warmth and historic character. Externally, the Federal Style façade has been stabilised and carefully restored.
Specific elements that create an environmentally conscience home include high-efficiency HVAC equipment, highly insulated Low-E double hung windows and high-efficiency doors, continuous envelope insulation, LEED certified interior finishes, and high-efficiency appliances. A low water consumption vegetative roof is designed to maximize eco-friendly possibilities and includes a rainwater harvesting system.
