This month is Black History Month, so throughout October we will be sharing articles, news and events which celebrate Black history and culture.
Chadwick Boseman surprises Black Panther fans
Chadwick Boseman’s starring superhero role in Black Panther cemented his status as a trailblazer; The New York Times called the film a “defining moment for Black America”. As well as winning critical praise and taking more than $1.3 billion US dollars (£973m) at cinemas worldwide, the film was widely seen as a cultural milestone for having a largely black cast and a black director, Ryan Coogler. Boseman said that the film had changed what it means to be "young, gifted and black".
Boseman tragically passed away in 2020, after a secret four-year battle with colon cancer. Although his career and life were cut far too short, Boseman's iconic on-screen body of work – as well as his incredible work off-screen - will undoubtedly be remembered forever.
As part of the Tonight Show a few years ago, Black Panther fans filmed a video message sharing what the movie means to them - what they didn't know was that Boseman was right behind the curtain, waiting to surprise them. Watch via the link below.

Howard University and Netflix have recently announced a scholarship honouring Boseman.
Nine books to read for Black History Month that don’t centre trauma or pain
Natalie Morris shares some of her favourite books by Black writers, and discusses how ‘when a conscious effort is made to learn more about Blackness, people often fall into the trap of centring Black pain and trauma. The stories are almost exclusively about racism or anti-racism, slavery, poverty, crime. While there is nothing wrong with reading about the history of struggle and oppression faced by generations of Black people – and these are important things to learn about – it’s vital that we don’t make this the only narrative.
There is so much more to Blackness. There is joy, romance, fantasy, sorrow, emotional pain that has nothing to do with racial trauma.’
