Scott Brownrigg project Victoria Gate has won the BCO Refurbished/Recycled Award for the South of England and South Wales region.
The accolade reflects our success in extensively refurbishing the 1986 office building which was originally designed by Scott Brownrigg. Creating an additional 25% lettable space, the building has recently been let to Formula One racing company McLaren Automotive.
It was important for us to retain the building’s original design integrity. By stripping it back to its frame and bringing the original ‘out-board’ external column structure inside (partially on the first floor and fully on the remaining floors) we were able to create cantilevered floor plates, a new entrance and a double height reception with electric blue blade details. By redeveloping a former inner courtyard, we have created a full height glazed central atrium which features a lit internal elevation.
The BREEAM ‘Excellent’, hi specification building incorporates a new fifth floor and terrace, set back from the façade under a cantilevered ‘floating’ roof with LED lighting which provides stunning views over Horsell Common through the frameless glass balustrades.
In addition our design enhances a key route through Woking with a landmark that references the HG Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’, expressing dynamic external structural features at the primary entrance elevation.
