Two Scott Brownrigg projects have been shortlisted for the Structural Timber Awards.

The Awards, which recognise the most innovative achievements in timber, have shortlisted St George’s Activity Centre for Education Project of the Year and the Timber Office Concept for Product Innovation Award.

Scott Brownrigg worked within a collaborative team on a flexible timber office concept that featured Stora Enso, Ramboll, JLL and Gardiner & Theobald. The Timber Office combines carbon reduction in building fabric and innovation. With an adaptable design, that uses a modular, kit of parts approach. Whilst the system is comparable to steel and concrete it has all the advantages of a timber product, significantly reducing construction time compared to the use of steel and concrete.

The Office Concept is a natural step in Scott Brownrigg’s everyday practice: developing solutions that allow us to design and construct with sustainable and renewable building materials.

Structural timber also features heavily in the design of St George’s Activity Centre. The site and building presented many challenges that were met by its Glulam roof structure. The innovative, freeform timber roof pushes the limits of structural timber to create a wave-like form that blends into the landscape, satisfying the client’s desire to meet Green Belt constraints, and complement the surrounding woodland. Working with Wiehag, we selected timber that was renewably sourced and held a low embodied carbon. 

Now shortlisted for Education Project of the Year, it adds to a growing list of recognition for this state-of-the-art building, which has been shortlisted for a RIBA South East Award, Offsite Construction Award and two Education Estates Awards.
