The topping out ceremony for the new Mulberry University Technical College (UTC) designed by international design practice Scott Brownrigg recently took place, bringing together Wates Construction and the wider project team.
Sir James Wates, Chairman of the Wates Group attended the event together with Dr Katharine Vincent, Principal of the UTC and Dr Vanessa Ogden, Head of Mulberry School for Girls. Also in attendance were a number of the subcontractor teams currently working on the scheme.
Sir James Wates, Dr Katharine Vincent and Dr Vanessa Ogden commemorated the event by filling in the remaining pocket of concrete on the fourth floor, after which Dr Vincent was presented with a commemorative trowel.
Sir James Wates speech highlighted many aspects of the Wates teams’ desire to create the very best in education buildings now and in the future and the importance of working closely with the relevant authorities and in continuing to develop successful relationships with the design and construction teams.
As part of the ceremony representations were made by Dr Katharine Vincent, Dr Vanessa Ogden as well as the school’s key project management team who have used their specialist knowledge throughout the process in order to successfully get to this landmark stage in the scheme’s delivery.
Dr Katharine Vincent in her speech delved into the impact that the UTC will have on the lives of many prospective pupils through its specialisms in the theatre, television and film, and healthcare, with pupils being drawn in from all over London. She also offered thanks to the Wates and design teams as well as the project Sponsors which include Goldsmiths University of London, The National Theatre, BFI, Barts Health Trust and Merrill Lynch.
The UTC is due to complete in August this year.
