Scott Brownrigg was part of the winning contactor-led team will design the 7,500 sq m, 750 student school.

Set within an Designated Area of Outstanding Beauty, and against the unique backdrop of the Black Mountains, the project will see the existing 1950’s secondary school replaced with new school buildings fit to meet the demands of education in the 21st century.

Targeting BREEAM Excellent, with a passivhaus principles approach, the school’s location has informed its design which currently comprises three teaching areas together with a main hall, sports hall, studio, Learning Resource Centre and 6th Form.  The elevations are designed to reflect the sensitives of designing with the National Parks and feature a natural stone façade.

This win builds upon the practice’s successful track record with BAM in creating inspiring educational environments; these include Chilton Trinity School, Winterbourne International Academy, Swindon UTC, Rydens Enterprise School and Great Western Academy”.

The Outline Business Case for the construction of the new 11-18 school in Brecon was approved last autumn as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.

Acting Head of Schools at Powys County Council, Gareth Jones said, “We have reached a significant stage in this important project for secondary school provision in South Powys. Appointing a contractor means we will be able progress design and build plans and we look forward to working closely with the school and the community.”

David Meredith, Chair of Governors at Brecon High School said “We are very pleased that the tender process has concluded with the successful appointment of an experienced contractor for what is a major project for the school and the next step in the schools journey of success following the examination success last summer and the school being removed from Special Measures”

The County Council have recognised the need to improve the secondary school infrastructure for some time and the replacement school is a key part plans to ensure pupils in the Brecon community are taught in buildings that are fit for purpose.

The design will be submitted for planning in Autumn this year, and will open for the new school year in September 2019.
