“Urban Schools: Designing for High Density” was published at the beginning of 2020 just a few short months before the world changed and the impact of the global pandemic set in. Our perception of urban environments and the need for urban schools has changed with it. When Helen Taylor and Sharon Wright collaborated on putting together the book they were very conscious of the theme of health, alongside wellbeing, in the context of children's opportunities and their experience of their school and city environments– as well as technical, health & safety and environmental issues. In this presentation Sharon and Helen will reflect on the themes of the book in an updated global context- considering the models of high rise, mixed use, repurposed and dispersed schools. They will also share ongoing research on designing schools for wellbeing- addressing the growing issues of mental health and eco-anxiety in young people. How can the architecture and design of school -environments make a difference?
