Scott Brownrigg’s project Medina Airport in Saudi Arabia has been shortlisted in the Transportation Structures and Infrastructure category at this year’s prestigious Structural Awards.

Organised by The Institute of Structural Engineers, these important awards are held every year in London to recognise the world’s most talented structural designers and showcase outstanding projects that lead industry development.

Scott Brownrigg was design leader for the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina and developed the master plan for the airport’s expansion over three phases. The design concept was inspired by the airport’s role as a gateway for millions of Islamic pilgrims and the palm tree, with its symbolism for peace and welcome, has become emblematic in the terminal building.

The first phase, which completed in 2014, includes the terminal building, the expansion and rehabilitation of two runways, new taxiways and apron for 18 contact stands and 20 remote stands capable of accommodating Code F aircraft.

The judges commented that:

“We were impressed by the rigour with which the structural system was developed to optimise off-site pre-fabrication and on-site construction and thus enable rapid completion without compromising quality. The palm tree structures form the primary support for the roof as well as the central theme of the building's elegant appearance. The excellent sustainability credentials of the building also caught our attention.”

Winners will be announced on 11 November at an awards ceremony at The Brewery in London.
