One Sovereign Square, Leeds has been handed over to occupiers KPMG. The global professional services firm are due to move into the building by this autumn.  Designed by international design practice Scott Brownrigg, the 60,000 sq ft building is the first of a number of developments on Sovereign Square and marks a significant milestone in regenerating this neglected part of city into a vibrant commercial quarter.

Developed by urban regeneration specialist Muse Developments and constructed by Morgan Sindall, the building is one of three buildings which will face into a central public green piazza. The building’s design responds to the site context, creating an urban setting that connects seamlessly to the existing city fabric and is responsive and adaptive to future development. The four-storey building is sculpted by the existing context, with a leaning façade, which faces the public space to accentuate the momentum of the new masterplan. A central atrium space and top floor terrace creates a dialogue between the building and its surroundings.

Leeds City Council will now begin significant public realm improvement works adjacent to the building, to create a new open green space for the benefit of workers, visitors and residents.

David Wells, Development Director, Muse Developments said: “The completion of this landmark building is an important milestone both for the regeneration of Sovereign Street and the recovery of the Leeds office market. Having such a prestigious occupier demonstrating their commitment to the scheme and the city is a testament to the proactive partnership approach between Muse and the Council to create an exciting new commercial quarter.”

Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for transport and the economy, Leeds City Council, said: “It’s great to see this scheme completed and I very much look forward to the council starting work on creating what will be a fantastic city centre green space for residents, people working locally and everyone passing through this developing area to enjoy.”

Chris Hearld, Northern Chairman and Leeds office senior partner, KPMG said: “After two years of working closely with Muse to create a building which is truly impressive, receiving the keys is an exciting way to start the year of our relocation.”
