Istanbul Grand Airport has been shortlisted for the Future Projects - Infrastructure Award at this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF).

The practice is the lead designer for the project which, when complete, will be the largest single terminal in the world with an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year. Phase 1 includes the terminal, interior design, wayfinding, three runways and substantial aviation related development. Further phases envisage additional runways, terminals and satellite piers and will increase the airport capacity to 180 million passengers.

As the lead designer, Scott Brownrigg has revisited the concept design originally prepared by Grimshaw, Nordic and Haptic, refining and developing it to suit the evolving requirements of the client including architectural planning, aesthetics, operational issues and buildability. Delivery architects on the scheme are Fonksiyon (central processor and the external envelope) and TAM/Kiklop (piers).

The World Architecture Festival, which will be held this year in Berlin from the 16-18 November, provides the largest gathering of the global architectural community, with over 60 countries represented. The fully inclusive festival awards programme recognises architectural excellence and some of the world’s best designed buildings, both completed and in development.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 18 November.
