The Scott Brownrigg-designed Brecon High School has been shortlisted for a Constructing Excellence in Wales [CEW] Award.

The Awards are the most significant celebration of best practice in Wales and the only event of its kind that connects every single element of construction working towards a built environment fit for future generations.

Brecon High School has been shortlisted for the Value Award. This category highlights projects that prioritise the value that the built environment can give to owners and users. In reviewing submissions, judges were looking for schemes that were motivated by the project outcomes throughout the design and construction process.

Built by BAM Construction, the secondary-school opened its doors to students and staff in December 2019. With end-user outcomes in mind throughout, the concept revolves around pupils and staff being at the heart of the school with large, open interconnecting rooms and double height spaces throughout.

Scott Brownrigg’s concept draws upon the simple, bold forms of traditional stone and modern barns in the Brecon Beacons.

Designed using ‘Passivhaus’ principles, the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated school provides a range of flexible teaching spaces to suit different learning styles and pedagogical approaches, all whilst enhancing the spectacular views of the National Park.

With the shortlist now announced, there will be a virtual awards ceremony in September 2020.
